{{Mardi Gras Cake}}

Mardi Gras.  I love the colors of mardi gras!  Here’s my take, in a little cake :)

I used a chocolate mold to make the mask.  Let it dry over a flower former and painted with luster dust.

The sides of the cake were finished off with a harlequin pattern.  I used the diamond quilt tool to make the diamond shaped cuts from fondant.  The fondant fleur de lys was made from a chocolate mold.

{{Oh, Monkey Love Baby Shower!}}

Recently I had the opportunity to make a “Monkey Love” themed cake for a girlie baby shower. Here is the end product from this fun partyware line :)

Monkey Love Cake

Monkey Love Cake

I started with the booties, since they’d take longest to make. I used the JEM Bootie Cutters for these. They make quick work of getting these cute little booties together in no time! Be sure to let them dry long enough before handling.

Gumpaste Booties

Gumpaste Booties

The monkey face was quite simple. I used my oval Fox Run Cutter Set to get the rough shape of the monkey head. Using the shell tool from the Wilton 10-piece Fondant/Gum Paste Kit, I fanned out some hair on the top of the monkey. Using a small oval cutter, cut out the lighter brown facial area. Finish off the eyes, mouth and nose with tiny fondant balls. Again, using two more smaller sizes of oval cutter, I cut out the ears.

{{Like the cake bottom border?!?! It’s my fave you you can easily recreate it with the First Impressions Silicone Pearl Mold! Definitely a must!}}

I like to finish off the cakes with a cake message, and this one was “Welcome Baby Tse”. Here I used Martha Stewart’s Silicone Alphabet Mold. This is one of my most favorite tools! And it’s really easy to use!

{{Hot Pink & Zebra Cakes… popular for Sweet 16!}}

Hot Pink and Zebra-striped cakes are quite popular amoung the Sweet 16 crowd. This is my 3rd design for a 16 year old, and it never gets old! Love the colors and fun pattern.

This 8″ cake is a marble cake.  The inside is also stripped zebra.  Very cool effect!  You can check out the tutorial on it here, at  www.chickabug.com.

{{2012 World Series Champs… the SF Giants Baseball Cap Cake!}}

Well, this SF Giants cake wraps up my extremely busy week.  LOVE how it turned out!  I hope Derek did too :)

SF Giants Baseball Cap Cake

I baked and carved an 8″ cake to shape it to a baseball cap.  There are great directions in The Confetti Cakes Cookbook.  You can find it here on Amazon.com.

{{A Week of Fondant Figures!}}

It’s been a crazy week full of fondant figure making!  But a fun one!

It started with a cute Bert and Ernie cake with a special little girl Anais who just turned 2!  Her favorite characters are Bert and Ernie and I was told she had a dream that she was skating with them!  Well, I had to at least try!  I made Bert, Ernie and Anais with skates, taking a rest on the ice.

This was a 12″ Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting.  I used the “pretty petal” design to cover it.

The next cake was for a 10 year old boy, who loves animals.

This was an 8″ vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, covered in fondant.

Cat & Dog Cake

I found a puppy tutorial on YouTube.  Great video by Aine2!  You can find it here!

As for the kitten, I found some images on Google.

{{Baby Girl Cupcakes!}}

Oh, Baby!  The little ones keep on coming!  LOVE making sweet treats for mommy’s to be!

Baby Girl Fondant Topped Cupcakes Collection

Baby Girl Fondant Topped Cupcakes Collection

Here’s the How-To:

Begin making your fondant toppers by cutting out the bases.  I used 2 3/8″ scalloped edge cutter from the Fat Daddio’s Nylon Cutter Set.

Stamped Footprint Topper

Stamped Footprint Topper

Then using a Wilton or Ateco Tip #1, punch out the little holes to create a lacy effect.

"It's A Girl" Stamped Fondant Topper

“It’s A Girl” Stamped Fondant Topper

I used clear rubber stamps to create the “impression” baby feet, or stamped with food color for the “It’s a Girl” stamp.

Baby Bottle Fondant Topper

Baby Bottle Fondant Topper

The baby bottle was cut from a cute little cookie cutter.  I added “measurement” lines to the side of the bottle using a knife (you can’t really see it) and then used the blade to create the ring of the bottle.  I painted both the nipple and the ring of the bottle using powdered color and lemon extract.

Fondant Butterflies

Fondant Butterflies

Butterflies were rolled to 1/16″ thickness, using the Wilton Fondant Rolling Pin.  Then use the Veined Butterfly Cutter set to punch out the Butterflies.  I let them dry in the Wilton Flower Former Set.

Fondant Baby Topper

To make the newborn baby, I used this First Impression Silicon Baby mold.  I’ve used this mold many times on cakes, never for a cupcake, but it added a little extra oomph to the cupcakes, and was a nice keepsake for the mom-to-be to keep :)

Happy Cupcaking!

{{Converse Shoes and Clothesline Baby Cake}}

New Year, and a New Baby Cake!!!

Happy New Year everyone!  Hope you all had a great holiday season.  It’s been really busy around here, hence the long hiatus, but I’m back!

The first cake of the year was an adorable Baby Shower cake.  I loved all the clothesline cakes I’ve seen over the years, and wanted to add a little something extra.  So I topped the cake with some adorable baby Converse shoes.  I think it complemented the overall theme quite nicely!

Converse Shoes & Clothesline Cake

These Converse Shoes were surprisingly easy to make, thanks to the help of this tutorial posted on Deborah Hwang Cakes blog.

I hand cut all the clothes hanging from the clothesline and used Tootsie Rolls (yes, they are great for “wood accents”) and rolled a wood grain pin over it.

The clothesline, flowers and grass I drew on using Food Writer Pens.

Had lots of fun making this one!

Until next time, Happy Caking :)

{{Holiday Tree Cake}}

The holidays are right around the corner and I have a super simple cake for any novice baker to make!

White Chocolate Tree Cake

White Chocolate Tree Cake

Simply frost a cake and add some chocolate piped trees around the sides.

I added a chocolate plaque for the top, but a nice cluster of piped stars would finish the top nicely.

{{Apple Pie & Zebra-Striped Caramel Apples}}

Fall is the perfect time to indulge in the harvest and APPLES!

My kids LOVE caramel apples!  They are a favorite amongst many of our friends, and the teachers and staff at the school my kids attend.  It’s their annual Thanksgiving Hospitality gift :)

Apple Pie & Zebra Striped Caramel Apples

Apple Pie & Zebra Striped Caramel Apples

This year I used Pippin apples, grown locally, unwaxed and organic!  Pippins are not as tart as Granny Smith, yet perfectly compliment the sweetness of the caramel.

I used Peter’s Caramel and Guittard’s White and Dark Chocolate wafers.

Preparing the Caramel Apples

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.  Place the 5lb. Caramel block in a dutch oven and melt it in the oven.  This will take about 45 – 90 minutes, depending on your oven.

Hammer your caramel sticks into the stem of the apples.

Cover you apples with the caramel and let set.

Once your caramel is set, melt white chocolate and pour into a squeeze bottle.

Squeeze the melted white chocolate onto the caramel apple.  I held the apple, by the stick, in my left hand and made a circular motion with the chocolate in my right, rotating the apple as I covered it with the chocolate.

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the chocolate before it sets.

Cinnamon Sugar Recipe

1/4 cup white sugar

1 tbsp cinnamon

Let the caramel apples set before bagging.

Zebra-Striped Caramel Apples

Zebra Striped Caramel Apples

Zebra Striped Caramel Apples

Fill two squeeze bottles, one with white chocolate and one with dark chocolate.

Take the dark chocolate bottle, and squeeze the dark chocolate onto the apple in a back and forth motion, over the length of the apple.  Repeat with the white chocolate.  Let the caramel apples set before bagging.

This is a perfect gift for any time of the year!  You can add nuts, holiday sprinkles or any other confection after you add the chocolate.  Wrap it up and give it as a gift today!
